Fresh water Clams Anyone ever dealt with Clams? I've been looking at them and considering getting a few to help keep the sand clean. The water changes aren't to bad, but its a pain to vacuum the sand. The gravel was easier, but the sand looks nice. Just wanted to know if anyone had some input? would love to hear it.

Tim, Vacuuming sand is actually easier than gravel. You just syphon off the top. Perhaps you are not using a large enough syphon tube.
I have NO experience with clams.....sorry.

I have the python gravel vac. I have a just hand held one that worked great, but its plugged inside the little part between the tube and the hose. The python only sucks stuff up if I pretty much stuff it all the way down i the sandand let the tube fill up with sand. Maybe I just need to buy a new little handheld one.

You shouldnt have to stick it all the way down through the sand.....just skim the top.

Sometimes going in with your hand and stirring it up a little helps. Just stir it up and let it settle. Then skim the top with the vaccuum. Always works good.

I do not have any clams myself, but a friend does, he has had them for 6 months or so. Not hard to take care of, they don't do very much, he tells me they do move around but have not ever seen them move when I have been there.
