IAA Profiles: Pseudotropheus demasoni -  Article and Photo's by Tim Dolan

Scientific Name: Pseudotropheus demasoni, Discovered by Laif DeMason

Size:  Adult Males 4"

Temp: 78>82

PH:. 7.2>8.6

Location: Lake Malawi, Tanzania, Pombo Rocks (usually found in deep water)

My Experience: I have been keeping Demasoni for around 5 years, what they have taught me is that you need to keep them in a tank no smaller than a 55 gallon at adulthood. The reason for this is that unless you keep a large group (12 to 20 ) they will eventually pick each other off and you will have much carnage. I have had good luck with my group by having several males with at least 3 females for each male. I feed them a diet consisting of mainly spirolina with a mix of other pellets and flakes as well. I provide a lot of rockwork(lacerock or holey rock works well). I perform 75% water changes weekly on the tank with overfiltration (mechanical) and sponge filters .It is best to obtain young specimens and raise them together as a group, rather than trying to combine a group of subadults or adults.
I have successfully kept these fish with several other species like Aulonocara, Victorian cichlids, Protomelas and even Altolamprologus.
